iPad 2 International Launch Still On for March 25, Apple Confirms

An Apple spokesperson has confirmed that iPad 2 is on track to launch internationally on March 25, in accordance with the company’s initial announcement.

Because of the massive earthquake hitting Japan, where five of the main iPad 2 components are manufactured, Apple’s already strained iPad 2 stock was believed to be affected.

iSuppli, a listed research firm, has noted that although some of the suppliers' factories remain undamaged, "delivery of components from all of these companies is likely to be impacted at least to some degree by logistical issues now plaguing most Japanese industries in the quake zone."

The firm specifically said in its March 17 report that Apple was likely to encounter logistical disruptions and supply shortages caused by hard-to-replace parts making up the iPad 2, like “the compass, the battery and possibly the advanced technology glass in the display.”

A translation error on the Czech Apple website further fueled speculation that Apple was delaying the international iPad 2 launch, after the company itself had confirmed shipment delays for earthquake stricken Japan.

However, "Everything that is on [Apple's U.K.] website still holds true; the website says 25 March and that's when it'll be," an Apple spokesperson told TechRadar.

Since its official debut on March 2, demand for the second-generation Apple tablet has been tremendous.

Not only does Apple have to cope with production difficulties likely posed by the disaster striking its component manufacturers, the tech giant will also need to have partner Foxconn ramp up assembly.

Still, with the Apple spokesperson saying their original timeframe is still in place, the iPad 2 is scheduled to ship March 25 in dozens more countries, including Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the U.K.

Apple Launches Mac OS X 10.6.7 to the Public

Client and Server versions of Apple’s newest incremental update for the Snow Leopard operating system are now officially available for download from the company’s servers.

Tested by Apple developers internally for over two months straight, Mac OS X 10.6.7 is finally available to the masses, with general operating system fixes that enhance the stability, compatibility, and security of Macintosh computers, according to Apple.

Cupertino says the fixes included in the Client update improve the reliability of Back to My Mac, resolve an issue when transferring files to certain SMB servers, and address various minor Mac App Store bugs.

On the Server side, “the 10.6.7 update is recommended for all servers currently running Snow Leopard Server. This update includes general operating system fixes, as well as specific fixes for [a number of specific issues],” Apple says.

Those include:

- properly displaying videos in Wiki pages that have special characters in their URL
- reliability of availability of Wikis after rebooting
- improved Wiki server cache verification
- reliability of Web Server restarts
- iChat Server now behaves correctly with .local domains

Top Six LCD Brands to Sell 35 Million Displays in China During 2011

With all the assessments and forecasts happening on the IT market, it is not unexpected to hear of the expectations that a certain country's market has for the various IT industry segments, so it wasn't all that unusual for analysts to look at how the LCD TV field will evolve in China.

Consumers might be aware of the fact that China is one of the largest emerging markets in the IT industry and has been an area where all sorts of products saw their shipment amounts rise by a fair deal on year.

Still, while this held true for a few years, it seems that the rate of sales growth is not as alert as before, at least not on the display segment.

Nevertheless, growth continues to be expected on the LCD (liquid crystal display) front, at least as far as the top six brands are concerned, or so it is reported.

Samsung, unsurprisingly, will take the head position, with a forecasted share of 35% of all LCD TVs, a percentage that LG trails behind with its own 30%.

Meanwhile, Chimei Innolux (CMI) will probably end up with a share of 18%, while AU Optronics will settle for 15%.

Along with whoever ends up on fifth and sixth places, these brands should end up shipping a total of 35 million LCDs, only slightly up form the 33 million in 2010.

Of course, all of the displays will be sold through China's own vendors. TCL should lead with 6.5 million domestic sales and 4 million in exports, for a total of 10.5 million, a figure that Hisense isn't far behind (9.3 million total, of which 2 million are exports).

Meanwhile, Skyworth will deliver 8.5 million, 1.5 of which are exported and the other 7 domestic, while Changhong will reach roughly 6 million (1 million exports). Haier and Konka will follow with 6 million and 5.3 million, respectively.

Basically, the Santa Clara, California-based company has completed the newest release of its driver suite for those video controllers.

The driver goes by the name of Release 267.17 and brings several benefits in the form of added device support, updates to existing features and optimizations.

These, of course, come in addition to elements that already existed even in the previous driver release, like support for DirectX 11, OpenGL 4.1 and Open Computing Language (OpenCL) 1.0 in Quadro FX Series x700 and newer cards, as well as the FX4600 and FX5600 models.

One of the several new additions to the driver is support for the newly released Quadro 2000D board.

Another is the inclusion of the NVIDIA Mosaic technology, which is supported only under Windows 7 and allows one to set up multi-display scenarios with up to eight panels.

The new version of the software also brought some updates to the NVIDIA control panel, like a multi-GPU visual indicator, 3D Vision pro controls and support for stereoscopic 3D windowed mode (for 3D programs like Google Earth).

Peel Turns Your iPhone into a Universal Remote for Home Entertainment

A common problem among home owners is when it comes to home entertainment, they often would have to deal with a lot of remote controls. And although there have been universal remotes around, like the Logitech Harmony devices, these cost more than US$100.

Peel, a Santa Clara-based startup introduces a new system of controlling your home entertainment components using your iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad, and a gourd-like accessory called the Peel fruit.

The plastic fruit works as a middleman between your phone (or tablet) and your TV components. It uses WiFi connection to relay commands from the smartphone to the fruit, which then transmits the appropriate infrared signals to all of your hardware devices.

Using a free Peel app for your phone, and a $99 plastic gourd (which is available on the Apple Store), you can control almost everything from changing channels to swapping between different content sources. You can even customize the app so that it only recommends programs you are interested in.

Keep in mind that you have to position the fruit device where it can “see” all of the components. This means you will have to put it several feet in front of the TV set.

Setup is almost easy. Simply install the app and connect the device, then you are introduced to a wizard that would automatically figure out all the remote codes of the components. However, expect a lot of trial-and-error, especially if you have a lot of hardware.

Peel has also announced about a partnership with TiVo that will allow the app to navigate through show you have recorded on your DVR. It also plans to launch an integration program with Netflix within the year, as well as a version for Android devices.

Lenovo Unveils Intel Classmate + PC For Kids

Intel has recently introduced its educational notebook that is targeted as an educational device for kids. Named as the Intel Classmate PC, it has been around since last year and is still coming up with newer versions. The latest in the lot is the new Classmate+ PC, a notebook for kids which was recently developed by Intel in partnership with PC manufacturer Lenovo.

The Lenovo Intel Classmate+ PC offers an affordable and child-friendly rugged notebook that can be used by kids in an educational setting. It has been designed by Intel and Lenovo with educating kids in mind. It sports an Intel Atom N455 CPU, 1 or 2 GB RAM, 250GB HDD, a 10.1 inch TFT display, a 1.3 MP webcam, built in speakers and WiFi connectivity. It also sports a rugged, drop resistant exterior and a spill-proof keyboard.

The Lenovo Intel Classmate+ PC is aimed for countries where there is little access to computing devices, especially for the kids. Although the price for this new kid’s educational notebook has not yet been disclosed, it would surely be made affordable especially since it is targeted for those less fortunate kids in developing countries.

Analyst: iPad 2 Rivals Are Better Off Collecting Dust

With the iPad 2 hitting the shelves today, will other tablets be able to make a sizable cut in the market pie? One analyst says they should forget about it.

This outlook is how J.P. Morgan Research analyst Mark Moskowitz see it. According to Moskowitz, other tablet manufacturers could hit an oversupply bubble during the second half of 2011 because they are unable to sell their devices.

J.P. Morgan estimates that Apple and its rivals would manufacture about 81 million tablets this year. However, Moskowitz foresees that only 47.9 million tablets would actually ship this year, causing an oversupply among many companies but he thinks the iPad would not suffer that fate.

“In our view, the technical and form factor improvements of the iPad 2 stand to make it tougher for the first generation of competitive offerings to play catch-up, meaning actual shipments could fall well short of plan,” Moskowitz wrote in his investor report.

The oversupply of tablets, if it does happen, would not only hurt the makers of tablet computers, but also manufacturers of individual hardware components such as touch screens, processors, and graphics chips.

Among the iPad 2 competitors that are set to be shipped in the coming months include the Samsung 8.9-inch Galaxy Tab (in addition to the recently-demoed Galaxy Tab 10.1, as seen in the picture), the BlackBerry PlayBook, and the HP TouchPad. Those and many other tablets will join the Motorola Xoom, which made its retail debut two weeks ago.
